The journey southward

“So, Dott,” Marl murmured. “We’re almost to the cave entrance, and so far, nobody has spotted us. That’s good.”

“You don’t say,” the goatherd murmured back.

Even in the faint moonlight, Marl could see him rolling his eyes. “Spare me your sarcasm. I’m letting you in on the universal ambush strategies that made me the Scourge of the South Sea for many years.”

“We really could use all of your experience and all of my luck at once right now,” Dott said. “And quickly, because our friends need help.” Patterns of red light flickered across his face as he stretched up on tiptoe for a better view.

“Here’s what we’ll do.” Marl clutched his staff. “We’ll run the rest of the way to the cave as fast as we can.”

The goatherd made another face as if to suggest that he did not consider this a new insight.

“Right when we see the entrance, we’ll use our artifacts. I’ll create a fire that will overshadow even the Prince of Shadows himself. That’ll distract them so you can slip inside their lair. With all the chaos up there, Fehris and Gordyn will already be frozen in terror. You know how it is with women and children.” He gave Dott an exaggerated wink. “So it’ll be helpful if they see your sweet little face first. I’ll come in behind you to secure our exit. The sassy mercenary will understand that she primarily has me to thank for her rescue, so don’t be too disappointed when she’s crazy about me afterward, my boy.” He clapped Dott’s bony shoulder in a jovial manner. “Your day will come.”

“Are you done?” Dott sounded impatient.

“Yes. Did you understand everything?”

“I did.” With that, the boy sprinted up the narrow path with the agility of a mountain goat.

“Wait, I…” Marl shook his head. “Damn kids. And I’ll have to save everyone yet again. Same old story.” He scrambled up the steep hill as fast as his old legs and love handles would allow.

Poetry in motion. He made rapid progress. And rapidly ran out of breath. And stumbled. Several times. The unlit path was littered with fist-sized stones. “Shit,” he wheezed. “Maybe this wasn’t my best plan.” He was about to call for Dott to wait up when he heard a screech. What was that? He stopped dead in his tracks.

Another scream rang out, this time mingled with a dangerous growl.

A confusion of voices erupted.

Marl knew immediately: they had captured Dott. Why had he expected otherwise? He gathered the last vestiges of his strength and ran up the incline, lighting the staff as he went. “Hang on, Dott, I’m coming!” When he reached the hilltop, he saw the goatherd surrounded by a cluster of indistinct figures. “Leave my friend alone or I’ll turn you all to aaassshhhh—” The sentence trailed off into uncontrolled yelling: his foot had caught on a rock, sending its owner and his freshly twisted ankle sprawling. The fire staff clattered away into the darkness.

A slender figure strode over to him. “Yet again, I have to rescue the frail old man who can’t even keep hold of his affefaff.
